Audit Finds $2,971 in Penalties, Interest Assessed Against Kingsville Township

Thursday, December 26, 2019

Columbus – Auditor of State Keith Faber today released the audit of Kingsville Township (Ashtabula County), which found that Fiscal Officer Sarah Patterson incurred and paid $2,971 in late fees, penalties, and interest.

“Late fees are an inappropriate use of taxpayer dollars,” Auditor Faber said. “Fortunately, our audit was able to catch this misspending, so the public will not have to pay for it.”

On September 12, 2018 and January 9, 2019, Patterson remitted $2,529 and $442 to the Internal Revenue Service to repay interest and penalties incurred from the third quarter 2016 through the third quarter 2018. The interest and penalties could have been avoided had Patterson remitted its employee federal tax withholdings in a timely fashion.

Auditor Faber issued a finding for recovery for public funds illegally expended against Patterson and her bonding company, in favor of the township.
