Audit Finds The Capella High School Fails to Accurately Track Attendance

Tuesday, April 2, 2019

Columbus – A state audit released today reveals The Capella High School (Summit County) owes the Ohio Department of Education $18,384 for overstating student attendance.

“Schools have an obligation to accurately report attendance, particularly when state funding depends on accurate records,” Auditor Faber said. “My office will continue to ensure that when school’s over report attendance, taxpayer dollars are returned to their rightful place.”

The Ohio Department of Education performed attendance records reviews on the school for fiscal years 2017 and 2018 and found the school was not entitled to some funding that it had received based on student attendance. Ohio law requires that deductions be made to repay these overpayments, however, the school closed effective June 30, 2018 and repayments are no longer being made. A net balance of $18,384 remains on the overpayment.

The Auditor’s office has issued a finding for recovery for the remaining balance against The Capella High School and in favor of the Ohio Department of Education.
